Are you interested in attending a world-class university on the East Coast? Are you considering majoring in STEM at one of the top universities in the country?
Or are you keen on exploring the intersection of technology and humanity? If you would say ‘yes’ to all of the above and can also handle the harsh Massachusetts winters, then MIT is a great choice for you. As I walked through the historic campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts founded in 1865, I admired the modern architecture and the distinctive buildings located just minutes away from the Charles River. While on campus, I was intrigued when I visited the various contemporary art museums and exhibits that are comprised of historical documents and rare books. As I continued through campus, I felt a sense of intellectual freedom and innovation to design and discover at one’s own pace. MIT takes pride in their small class sizes, which is a key component to providing a personalized, high-quality education to the ingenious students there. Moreover, the campus community fosters a collaborative and supportive environment that inspires students to work together as they reach new heights in their achievements.
Known to be an academic paradise for some of the world’s brightest young minds, MIT is the dream university of many outstanding students and therefore is a very selective college with an acceptance rate of 4.1%. Therefore, if you are considering MIT, there are a few factors to make your application stand out and increase your chances of admission. One piece of advice is to earn a high SAT score, especially in the Math section, as the middle 50% SAT range of students admitted to MIT is 1510-1570. Therefore, it is best to aim for 1570 or higher on the SAT, which would put your score in the top 25% of admitted students.
However, standardized test scores are certainly not the only factor that MIT considers in the admissions process. MIT focuses on a holistic admission process, which means they take a variety of factors into consideration, including strong extracurricular activities and an intriguing personal statement. As the MIT admissions office states, "At MIT we admit people, not numbers.” Therefore, while a strong GPA and standardized test scores can help your application get thorough consideration from admissions officers, having a compelling story that links your scores, extracurricular activities, personal experiences, and courses with what your goals are for the future and how MIT will help you get there is what will help you land an offer from this prestigious institution.
