Computer Science at UMD

UMD's Computer Science program, housed in their College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences, attracts top-tier applicants from all over the globe. Due to high demand, the admissions process for Computer Science is highly competitive. For the Class of 2024, UMD's acceptance rate for out-of-state students across all programs was around 19%. However, admission for Computer Science is even more selective than general admission.

Admission Policy Change (Fall 2024 and Beyond)

Starting in Fall 2024, UMD has implemented a new policy demand for the major. This change includes an increase in the number of entering computer science slots by 150. However, the policy also reduces the number of internal and transfer admissions by 100. Students who want to switch to or retain the Computer Science major must meet a minimum grade requirement in specific introductory courses. This makes it even more critical to perform well in foundational courses to maintain eligibility.

Concentrations

Within the Computer Science major, you can choose the general track or one of 4 specializations: Cybersecurity, Data Science, Quantum Information, or Machine Learning.

Alternative Majors to Computer Science: Exploring Your Options 

 If you’re interested in computing but open to exploring academic majors outside of traditional Computer Science, here are some excellent alternatives:

• Biocomputational Engineering (College of Engineering): This interdisciplinary program blends biology, engineering, and computational sciences. Students learn to use computation and data science to model biological systems and analyze biological datasets. It’s ideal for those interested in combining life sciences with technology. The program is structured as a 2+2 model: two years at UMD's main campus and two years at the Universities at Shady Grove.
  
  
• Computer Engineering (College of Engineering): Computer Engineering combines principles of electrical engineering and computer science. You’ll learn about everything from operating systems and computer architecture to robotics and embedded systems. It’s a great choice for students who want to focus on hardware and systems development.
  
  
• Electrical Engineering (College of Engineering): If you're drawn to working with electronics, power systems, and telecommunications, Electrical Engineering offers a broad range of specializations, including robotics, systems control, and digital signal processing. • Social Data Science (College of Information and College of Behavioral and Social Sciences): If you’re interested in using data to understand human behavior, Social Data Science teaches you to work through the entire data life cycle—gathering, analyzing, and presenting data about social and behavioral patterns. It’s an ideal choice for those interested in social sciences, behavioral analytics, and big data applications.
