STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

How to use the GPA Calculator

Need to figure out what your GPA will be based on what classes you're going to take? Our GPA calculator will help! Below are instructions on how to use it.

Note: Every school district has its own system on reporting GPAs, which may be different from what is presented above.

1. Select Your Grade Format

High schools across America use different grading systems. If your school operates on a letter grade or percentage format, you can select the appropriate option.

Letter grades typically range from A+ to F on the 4.0 unweighted scale, with weighted GPAs also considered.

Percentage grades usually span from 100% to 60%, with anything below 59% categorized as an F (fail).

2. Add Your Semester Label

You can customize the semester label to make it easy to organize.

3. Add Courses To Calculate Your GPA

Add your courses using the following format:

  • Course Name
  • Grade (Letter or Percentage)
  • Credits (Default to 1 if unknown)
  • Course Type (Regular, AP, Honors, etc.)

Regular classes are scored based on the standard scale (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2). For Weighted GPAs, Honors courses receive an additional 0.5 points (A = 4.5, B = 3.5, C = 2.5), while College, Advanced Placement (AP), or IB courses gain an extra full point (A = 5, B = 4, C = 3). For Unweighted GPAs, all courses are on a 4 point scale.

Your GPA will automatically update as you input course details, including weights, and will display under the ‘Your GPA’ section as both weighted and unweighted GPA:

  • Weighted GPA – Includes course credits and type weightings.
  • Unweighted GPA – Excludes course credits and type weightings.

Click the “Add Course” button to input additional courses.

4. Add a Semester

Need another semester? Click on “Add semester” and follow step 2, 3 and 4 to enter your course grades. Each semester GPA will show up on the right side under ‘Your GPA’ section.

5. View Your Weighted and Unweighted GPAs

You can view your weighted and unweighted GPAs by clicking on their respective buttons.

Your unweighted GPA tells us roughly what proportion of your classes you've received As in.

Your weighted GPA tells us roughly what your class rigor is.

Your school may favor one over the other and colleges may look at either one or both.

The higher the two types of GPAs, the better, but as with anything challenging, it's a balance to figure out.
